UNYPHIED, the community-wide forum has been formed to assist the Upstate New York healthcare community with HIPAA standards implementation.  HIPAA regulates how patient information is to be protected and the Administrative Simplification provision identifies a method in which to simplify the electronic claim transactions of healthcare providers and payers with standardized formats.  This forum focuses on HIPAA's regulations and works in conjunction with the national Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI), an organization that acts as an advisory to the Department of Health and Human Services. This regional WEDI affiliate called UNYPHIED, stands for the Upstate New York Professional Healthcare Information and Education Demonstration. This "unified" effort is assisting the healthcare continuum with the implementation of the standards the government has set forth.  The mission of UNYPHIED is to establish regional Administrative Simplification readiness and leverage the healthcare community's intellectual capital to raise awareness and share best practices to implement HIPAA standards more efficiently.  UNYPHIED was founded by Gina Fedele, Manager of Professional Relations of The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, and Tak Nobumoto, Director of Strategic IT Planning and Director of HIPAA Compliance, UB Associates, Inc. in the spring of 2003.  Consensus within the healthcare community is key to the Administrative Simplification provision's success.  Whether trying to educate the healthcare community about privacy, security, or transaction and code sets, it is apparent that without a collaborative effort, the whole idea of Administrative Simplification becomes anything but simple.    The entire healthcare community of Upstate New York is invited to join the effort. Providers, payers and vendors alike may attend the general meetings (see Calendar).  If you are interested in joining the list serve, send your email address and contact information or call:
